FAQs
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a safe, natural state of selective, focused attention. When we enter into this absorbed state of hypnosis, we can use our thoughts, talents and experiences in ways not usually available to us.
What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis as a tool to facilitate change. The hypnotherapy protocol begins with talking over a client’s goals, obstacles, and concerns. The next step safely quiets the conscious mind while the subconscious mind becomes very attentive, engaged, and aware. While in this heightened state of concentration, the mind is very creative and responsive, and a skilled hypnotherapist guides the client to gently release unwanted habits of thought and replace them with new, positive, and lasting behaviors. As a clinical hypnotherapist, much of my work is focused on complementary medical hypnotherapy, a context where enhanced fertility and reduction or removal of pain (analgesia) are among the most dramatic effects of hypnosis.
What is self-hypnosis?
Really, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, even when assisted by a skilled hypnotherapist. Self-hypnosis for the purpose of pain management, conception, or making positive behavioral changes is a learned skill. Although similar in some ways to meditation, hypnosis is a participatory process, and I’ll work with you to create the most effective sessions for you based on the information you provide in our conversations.
Can I be hypnotized?
If you’re able to concentrate well enough to watch a 15-minute video, focused enough to follow simple verbal instructions, and if you have the type of imaginative thinking that allows you to become involved in a good story – yes, you can be hypnotized if you so choose.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No, the hypnotic session can come to a close whenever you choose. It is your choice to enter hypnosis and you can always choose to leave it. If you were left in a hypnotic state by your hypnotherapist, you would either return to full consciousness on your own or drift into a natural sleep and awaken after a short pleasant nap.
Will I be in control and aware of what is happening?
Yes. You are not unconscious, but rather in a state of awareness with a specific focus of attention. You can hear everything that is being said and nothing happens without your consent, as you remain in calm, relaxed control.
Is hypnotherapy going to interfere with my religion?
I use a very gentle, safe approach, naturally aligning with your beliefs because you will remain in complete control throughout the process. Rather than “surrendering” to suggestions made during hypnosis, you will be relaxed, aware, responsive, and fully engaged with heightened creativity and focus.
